Who Are We?
We are the Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP) which is a nonprofit organization that supports asylum seekers in the Brattleboro, Vermont area.
Our History
Founded in 2016 by Steve Crofter, CASP (Community Asylum Seekers Project) began as a small volunteer effort offering legal, social, and community support to asylum seekers in Vermont. Over the years, it has grown into a vital network helping individuals and families from around the world rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. In 2022, CASP launched the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project (VAAP) to expand pro bono legal support, an initiative that has since become its own nonprofit dedicated to representing asylum seekers and mentoring future immigration attorneys.
What Do We Do?
The mission of the Community Asylum Seekers Project is to cultivate a supportive community for those seeking asylum in the U.S., while providing for basic needs and accompanying asylum seekers on their journey towards building a life in this country.
Asylum Seekers
Are people who flee their country of residence, enter another country, and apply for refuge. An asylum seeker is an immigrant who has been forcibly displaced and might have fled their home country because of war, gender violence, or other factors harming them or their family.
We Currently Support
Over 40 asylum seeking adults and children with wraparound support, and approximately 100 people with general services. Our clients come from Honduras, Sudan, Colombia, Afghanistan, Ghana, Russia, Mexico, Cuba, and several other countries. They attend local schools and churches, staff local businesses, and volunteer at local food banks and nonprofits.
The Supportive Community
Provided by our staff and volunteers includes neighborhood orientation, language learning, social support, legal aid, medical and mental health care, connections to community services, school enrollment, job training and placement, and any other needs that arise!
