Mission: The product will be an altered book – a dictionary that has words and definitions deleted (whited out) or altered (cut-and-paste) in a satirical protest of the activities of the DOGE organization.
Message: In a startling reflection of George Orwell’s “1984”, the new Administration’s DOGE has started to change the meanings of words and phrases, or eliminate them entirely from the Federal Government. Examples include the elimination of the phrase “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion”, and the ban on using the word “gender” in any Federal documentation.
In a satirical protest of this frightening movement, my project will produce the official “2025 American Dictionary” produced by the organization called “MAGA Words, Inc.” It is in reality an altered book – starting with the 2024 publication of the Intermediate English Dictionary by Merriam-Webster. It uses white out to “white wash” out words or phrases that are no longer appropriate in the MAGA universe, and uses cut-and-paste techniques to alter other words and phrases throughout the entire book.
My project actually started in February, and I have been seeking the right way to share this protest project with the world. As a child of immigrants to this country, the May Arts Marathon of CASP is the perfect match. Every weekday in May, my sponsors will receive an email from me that includes a short text narrative and either an image from the altered book, or an example of the alteration. I plan to explore topics that range from “All-American, All The Time” to “The Role of Women” and “Race.” The project / experiment will explore the ramifications of deletions and alterations and the impact of those changes on the landscape of language in an imagined “MAGA America.” It is also a chance for introspection and exploration of my own biases, fears, and prejudices. Once the dictionary is complete, I hope to find a “Protest Art” show where it can be displayed, and to sell it to raise additional funds for CASP.
The May Arts Marathon is a community effort. Artists support their vision for a just world by sending copies of their creative work to sponsors like you 5 days a week for the month of May. Sponsors donate to support this work. Together we support asylum seekers who, in turn, enrich our community with their determination, energy, and diverse experiences.
