May Arts Marathon:

Grid unLock: Returning to the Studio

May Arts Marathon Participant: Appel Bronstein

Mission: Sketches and test panels, in watercolor, pencil, ink, maybe even oil or acrylics for a new series of grid paintings based on words, phrases, and poems. I will share photos or brief descriptions of my process each day via email.

Message: The grids are my way of getting back to making art, which I have not been able to do for almost two years. The main reason for my unwanted sabbatical was the loss of my former studio space. Now I am newly able to return to a working studio, which for me marks the end of an exile. My experience of displacement–which is so benign compared with what our unbelievably strong and courageous asylum seekers endure–has served to further deepen my admiration for their indomitable spirits, and compels me to do whatever I possibly can to help.

The grids themselves are inspired by Paul Klee’s grid paintings, both geometric and language-based. I bring to my grids a background as a crystallographer, a color theorist, a writer, and a researcher in diagnostic imaging and pattern recognition. The joy of art is fusing all these ways of understanding into a single image. (Or at least trying to.)

I am so grateful to CASP for spearheading this program. And I am even more grateful to the people who continue to stream into this country in search of their dream and our reality. Let us never take that dream for granted, especially with all the uncertainty emerging from the new administration. Let us always welcome people who are experiencing violence and terror in their home countries and hope they will continue to seek asylum in this country. Sponsors like you are key to CASP being able to support its mission of cultivating a supportive community for asylum seekers in Southern Vermont, while fulfilling basic needs and accompanying them on their journey towards building a better life in this country.

The May Arts Marathon is a community effort. Artists support their vision for a just world by sending copies of their creative work to sponsors like you. Sponsors donate to support this work. Together we support asylum seekers who, in turn, enrich our community with their determination, energy, and diverse experiences.
