April Arts Marathon Participant: Ruth Shafer
Mission: My mission is to finish any or all of the art quilts I’ve started as part of my ‘Comforters’ series.
Message: Hello!
My name is Ruth Shafer, and I’m a fabric artist based in Brattleboro, VT. You may have seen my sculptures at the Southern Vermont Arts Center or the Putney School, or my quilts at the Latchis Gallery. I work with second-hand materials to create conceptual art that leverages familiarity and humor to challenge cultural expectations.
It is my pleasure to participate in the CASP Arts Marathon for my second year. Once again, I’ll be spending my studio time making political art quilts for my ongoing ‘Comforters’ series, featuring bright colors, bold prints, and big screaming taglines about things that fill me with rage/grief/joy/awe.
Last year, I had 23 sponsors and together we raised $1684.
This year, I want 50 sponsors, and I want to raise $3000 together!
As an incentive, every donor will receive an art postcard from me, and donors of $45 or more will receive a limited edition screen print T-shirt!
The phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ gets tossed around a lot, but has mostly been enacted by fast food corporations that create local menus for world domination. The CASP Art Marathon is an exception; it is an amazing opportunity to support those most harmed by vicious international politics, all while being thanked by a local artist (like me).
We need creativity, community, and currency to take care of each other.
You can support my art marathon by becoming a donor and by sharing this fundraiser with people who care.
See you in the studio,
Ruth
