April Arts Marathon Participant: Sheila Garrett

Mission: This year I will add to my collection of pencil sketches of people who inspire me in their commitment to social justice. Because I’m also dealing with breast cancer, I wo’n’t try to do one every day. But I will commit to drawing so I may include other things, maybe some abstract or landscapes, playing around with color.

Message: I’ve been supporting CASP since it began years ago. Some needs have changed but certainly not disappeared. It has been a honor to know a few of the people who have been supported by CASP as well as the founders, staff and board members. I’m so grateful for the vital work they all do.

The April Arts Marathon is the Community Asylum Seekers Project’s key fundraiser. CASP hopes to raise $50,000 this year. With all the uncertainty right now, one thing we know for sure is that people who are experiencing violence and terror in their home countries are continuing to seek asylum in this country.

Sponsors like you are critical to CASP’s ability to accompany asylum seekers. Every donation directly supports our community for asylum seekers in Southern Vermont. All proceeds go toward asylum seekers’ basic needs and accompanying them on their journey building a better life in this country.

CASP staff are meeting with families to plan for the worst–if parents are detained, who will care for their children? We are guiding families through setting up temporary guardianship, and the conversations are heartbreaking. Now more than ever we need creative ways to provide support for those who are fleeing violence and oppression in their home countries.

Through the April Arts Marathon, we build a collective community of care and resistance, while making a huge impact in the lives of asylum seekers! During April, we artists are sharing our work five days a week with sponsors who pledge donations to CASP–turning daily creativity into critical community support. Even small donations make a difference and encourage us to do artwork every day. It’s a great Win/Win/Win project!
