May Arts Marathon Participant: Tina K Olsen
Mission: I will be painting animals, people, plants and landscape as if sheltering each other. The style will be abstract forms intertwined in bright colors and in black and white. Compassionate shelter that we give each other and animals is our protection. I hope to illustrate this.
Message:
I will be drawing, painting, and or writing everyday, something from my on going work. I will send an image of the work and write a poem or description of the work. I am not clear yet whether I will work as I always do – let the subject evolve – abstractly – or draw about sheltering plants, animals, land and people. I am intrigued with the idea that creativity and compassion is our protection and shelter.
I will give a small piece of work or copy of it to any sponsor who would like to come to my studio.
Recently I drew the Brattleboro select board meeting at the library. The community effort showed in each face. I came away feeling calm with a deep respect for their service. Drawing them reminded me of the ways we give each other shelter – thru service. That drawing, included here, was done in a large book with magic markers. The other examples are in oil of landscapes.
I am an LCSW and worked for many years in NYC as an expressive arts therapist and art teacher. My mothers people came to Deerfield very early from England and were in the massacre. My fathers ancestors were Mennonite farmers escaping persecution from Germany – also very early. I grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and one of my daughters and granddaughter graduated from Putney School. At present I teach “Art as Meditation” at the River Gallery School with Eric Cutler. I show at 118 Elliot and Super Fresh in Brattleboro. My paintings will be at the Brattleboro Hospital and Skidmore College this June. I live in Brattleboro with my partner Sky Gould and 4 cats. I have been making art all my life.
Many thanks to all for this opportunity.
