A Message From CASP's Executive Director
Sharon Hall-Smith
Dear CASP Supporter,
As 2025 draws to a close, we at the Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP) would like to thank you for your support in creating a safe and welcoming community fir those seeking asylum in southern Vermont!
In 2025, CASP has successfully assisted asylum seekers in the following ways:
- Served a total of 93 clients from Afghanistan, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Eritrea, Ghana, Honduras, Liberia, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Sudan, Tibet, Venezuela, and Yemen.
- Supported 3 individuals in successfully achieving asylum status.
- Provided bond for one new client allowing them to be released from ICE detention.
- Sponsored 2 clients who were aging out of the program for unaccompanied minors through the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
- Provided housing, employment, continued learning, and/or case management services to 36 clients, of whom 7 were new clients in 2025.
- Supported 4 of our clients in applying for and receiving work authorization.
- Assisted 61 asylum seekers through pro se clinics, designed to provide individuals without legal representation with information needed to file their own immigration application.
- Launched a successful community fundraiser that provided a new leg brace for a polio survivor with mobility issues.
- Hosted a "Know Your Rights" training with the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project and the Brattleboro Development Community Corporation, attended by over 150 community members.
This year brought new challenges. Detentions of asylum seekers have increased, and many are no longer eligible for release on bond. Filing fees have risen dramatically, including the introduction of a new annual asylum seeker fee. These changes make an already daunting process even harder. And yet, CASP continues to adapt and leverage our impact. Volunteers are the backbone of our work, and we would like to thank each and every one of you! Together alongside our community partners, we were able to respond to these shifting needs with compassion, urgency, and unwavering commitment. Truly, our work is a community effort!
CASP is only able to do this important work with your support. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have already contributed to CASP this past year. In 2026, our work continues. Please consider making a donation if you haven't done so already. Your support ensures that these life-changing services continue and grow as we welcome new asylum seekers. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to support asylum seekers in the new year!
Best wishes for a wonderful year in 2026!
